(Reading for Comprehension, Language Study, Grammar, Note-making, Mind Mapping)

Q.1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below:

But though we are bound to endorse the verdict against the lift-man, most people will have a certain sympathy with him. While it is true that there is no law that compels us to say “Please”, there is social practice much older and much more sacred than any law which enjoins us to be civil. And the first requirement of civility is that we should acknowledge a service. “Please” and “Thank you” are the small change with which we pay our ways as social beings. They are the little courtesies by which we keep the machine of life oiled and running sweetly. They put our intercourse upon the basis of a friendly co-operation, an easy giveand-take, instead of on the basis of superiors dictating to inferiors. It is a very vulgar mind that would wish to command where he can have the service for asking. and have it with willingness and good-feeling instead of resentment.

I should like to “feature” in this connection my friend, the polite conductor. By this discriminating title I do notintend to suggest a rebuketoconductors generally. On the contrary, I am disposed to think that there are few classes of men who come through the ordeal of a very trying calling better than bus conductors do. Here and there you will meet an unpleasant specimen who regards the passengers as his natural enemies-as creatures whose chief purpose on the bus is to cheat him, and who can only be kept reasonably honest by a loud voice and an aggressive manner. But this type is rare-rarer than it used to be.

A1. Complete the following sentences:

  1. The first requirement of civility is that
  2. Unpleasant specimen regards ………………… as his natural enemies.

B2. Spot the error in the given sentences and rewrite the correct sentences:

Q.2. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below:

Everything is going electronic and toys are no exception. Old fashioned playthings-like balls and building blocks are fast being replaced by gizmos that zoom around the room at the push of a button. Such toys provide instant entertainment, but contribute little to the child’s development. Ordinary toys do much more than entertain the child. They help in the child’s psychological and physical development.

A child building a tower with a basic set of blocks, claps and laughs when the tower stands but he is also developing some vital skills. He learns when to focus his attention, improve his hand and eye co-ordination and learns to visualise a goal. When the tower tumbles, he learns to approach the task in a different way. Toys which allow unstructured play encourage imagination and creativity.

Child psychologists feel that high tech novelties that we buy for children actually rob them of opportunities of mental and physical development. Many of the skills we use as adults were developed during playtime with the help of basic toys. Therefore, psychologists suggest to save some space for toys that work on kid power.

A1. Complete the following :

students council openly discussed all matters affecting the school including curriculum, to give students an opportunity to develop leadership skills by organising and carrying out school activities and service projects contributing to school spirit and community welfare.

(C) 1. The story begins in London and the plot moves on with fogg facing many obstacles to reach London on time. Fix arrests Fogg at Liverpool which delays him. Fogg feels that he has missed the deadline but in reality he reaches a day earlier.

  1. The central idea of ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ is how Fogg finally wins the bet though there are unexpected delays and missed trains. He had unknowingly gained a day so was still on time to meet the deadline. Love and its attainment is more important than all the challenges and money in the world.

(D) 1.

Respected teachers and my friends,

Today I am standing before you to express my views on the topic-An Indian farmer.

About people of our nation are involved in agriculture. If Indian economy is taken into account, a farmer can be seen as the backbone of our country.

An Indian farmer leads a very simple but arduous life. He works in field throughout the year bearing all the changing climatic conditions. He really works hard for ploughing the land, sowing the seeds and growing crops. Whatever he produces is essential for the livelihood of all.

Farmer’s family entirely rely on crops for their livelihood fortunately the condition of small land holders and marginal farmer is not good at all. They take loans from banks which they cannot repay without working extra hours. An Indian farmer adjust himself in every situation. A farmer can rightly be called a hero behind the curtain for providing us food.

Beauty is truth, Truth is beauty

This proverb is a beautiful expression of John Keats in his poem ‘Ode On A Grecian Urn’. This proverbial expresion clearly conveys the fact that beauty around us is the truth and nothing else is really greater than truth. The real beauty never lies in any particular object but it lies in the lasting impact or durability of it.

The poet really wants to emphasise the idea that truth in this would never perishes but stays permanent in the world. There are many things around us which look beautiful but their beauty is transient. The poet is not ready to consider anything as equal to as truth. Outward appearances can prove to be deceptive so there is a need of looking into the inner or core beauty. Truth and beauty gives pleasure.

Truth is always the ultimate reality. Beauty and truth never lose their nobility or sublimity. So, it is rightly said that ‘Truth is beauty and beauty is truth’.

Film Review

The feature film ‘Super 30 ‘ is a note worthy film throwing light on the dedication and devotion of an IITian. The characters and roles played by the artists are Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan), Lallanji (Aditya Srivastava), Supriya (Mrunal Thakur) etc.

This film is actually a bio-pic of Anand Kumar who started a batch of 30 students to make them IITians. Young Anand, a son of a postman, is extremely brilliant in Maths and desires to study in Cambridge University. Though he gets the admission, his poverty makes him lose it. While working for livelihood, an administrator Lallanji gives him a break to teach students at an IIT coaching centre. But when he sees poor students, he gets upset and decides to use his talent for them. He starts his own coaching institute in Patna, though he has to
quickly nowadays. I wish to keep myself abreast with this changing scenario and the newer developments that are coming up in the business world. So I aspire to get degree in Business Studies from a truly prestigious institute as yours.

My overall performance in the board examination of std. X was really good and my scores in Maths and English were impressive. I opted for the commerce stream in the junior college. My favourite area of study is Accountancy and I really feel at ease with analysis of balance sheets, trade, stocks etc. These words are used in all our family and social gatherings.

A businessman needs a cool temperament as agitation can’t lead a person to take right decisions. I have the ability to keep my temper cool even in very disturbing situations. So I am able to evaluate all pros and cons of the situation. Because of such quality, I was selected as the captain of our college cricket team as it requires to make quick and effective decisions.

Just believing in the fact that I am gifted with qualities to become a good businessman is boastfulness. So I need to prove it and fortunately I had on opportunity knocking on my door during the business fair that was organised by our college. I wanted to have a stall selling helmets but the principal didn’t accept it. Somehow I got the permission after persistent efforts. I exchanged the old helmets and with new ones and my friends just had to pay the difference because of my tie-up with the helmet dealer. I also offered a small sack as a gift for the buyers-Luckily my venture succeeded and I received a good profit and satisfaction.

This experience has made me realise what I should do. Your reputed institute can offer me what I am searching for. I wish to have not just a degree but the guidance of the experienced and tactful faculty of your institution which will offer me the right exposure. I want to learn new things as I feel that business means enjoying each moment of taking correct decisions. I must get admitted to an institution like yours to achieve my goal.

  2. The family does not interact with him so his book is his only company.
  3. His bad-tempered children never share details of their life with him.
  4. He is unnoticed, uncared for like an outsider in his own home and family.

A2. The father silently contemplates his past as there is no communication with his family members. Reliving the past would have been his way of connecting with the family. Future plans could be discussed with family members. But he has nothing like this in his present. He recalls the past and thinks of possible grand children.

A3. The extract shows the family members to be selfish and uncaring as the father eats stale food. If he has a wife, she doesn’t seem to care about his well being. The children never share light moments or conversation with their father. Perhaps the mother’s conduct has made the children treat him so.

(B) The poem India Weavers is composed by Sarojini Naidu. This poem is about the work done by the Indian craftsmen on their looms. The peom contains three stanzas and these stanzas represent three different stages of life. There are three questions posed about their weaving of certain cloth, time and purpose and the weavers provide answers to them.

The colours of the cloth woven are associated with both marriage and death. First stanza deals with cloth for a newborn child, second stanza refers to cloth for a queen or a bride and the last stanza mentions the cloth for a dead man. There are three four lined stanzas having dialogues. The conversational tone offer a flow to the entire peom.

The poem is metaphorical as the ‘dawn’ stand for the new life or a newborn while ‘dusk’ stands for marriage and ‘white’ stands for death.
