Q.1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below:

Soapy was seized with a sudden fear that some dreadful enchantment had rendered him immune to arrest. He was in a state of panic and when he came upon another policeman lounging grandly in front of a glittering theatre, he caught at the immediate straw of ‘disorderly conduct’.

On the sidewalk Soapy began to yell drunken gibberish at the top of his harsh voice. He danced, howled, raved and otherwise disturbed the skies.

The policeman merely twirled his club, turned his back to Soapy and remarked to a citizen:

“Tis one of them Yale lads celebratin the goose egg they give to the Hartford college. Noisy; but no harm. We’ve instructions to let them be.”

Disconsolate, Soapy stopped his unavailing racket. Would never a policeman lay hands on him? In his fancy, the island seemed an unattainable Arcadia. He buttoned his thin coat against the chilling wind. In a cigar store he saw a well-dressed man lighting a cigar at the swinging light. He had set his silk umbrella by the door on entering. Soapy stepped inside, grabbed the umbrella and sauntered off with it slowly. The man at the cigar light followed hastily.

“My umbrella,” he said sternly.

“Oh, is it?” sneered Soapy, adding insult to petty larceny. “Well, why don’t you call a policeman? I took it. Your umbrella! Why don’t you call a cop? There stands one on the corner.”

The umbrella owner slowed his steps. Soapy did likewise, with a premonition that luck would again run against him. The policeman eyed at the two curiously.

Language used by the characters in the film belongs typically to Bihar. Even the appearances of the artists are very typical. The duo Ajay-Atul has composed music for the film. Farah Khan has directed the dance sequences. The director of the film Vikas Behl has done an excellent job.

I would certainly recommend the film as a must watch. It is because this is based on the real story of a dedicated teacher, Prof. Anand Kumar of Bihar. The way he shapes the career of the needy students selflessly is a lesson to be learnt.

Personality Development

Personality is what makes a person unique. Personality development is the enhancement of some definite skill, essential for happiness and success in life.

Personality doesn’t mean only physical fitness and charming look but, it means the development of body, mind and soul or the development of the organised pattern of behaviour and a broad outlook. The attitude that we possess is also very important. The right attitude helps in taking the right decisions.

Anyone with a desire to develop the personality should be called optimistic. Such positive attitude towards life is always satisfying and rewarding. There is a need of cultivating positive traits for the development of personality. A good personality needs to be acquired and developed.

There are certain barriers in personality development. To overcome these barriers, we need to adjust with the surrounding.

elder sister was more promising. Anne was chiefly remarkable for the early interest she took in other people. She was emotional and strong willed; ‘a real problem child.’ Her father once told me, “a great talker and fond of nice clothes”. Life in town, where she was usually surrounded by a chattering crowd of girl-friends, suited her exactly. This was a lucky fact because the Frank family could only rarely afford a holiday. Nor did they own a car.

When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the Franks were trapped. Earlier than most Jews in Amsterdam, Otto Frank realised that the time might come when he and his family would have to go into hiding. Respected Sir,

I am writing this email to bring to your kind notice regarding the hazardous conditions caused due to the corona pandemic. I would like to state that the pandemic is causing a great threat in the state as a lot of people are getting infected and are dying due to it. The government and health ministry should make people realise the contagious nature of the disease and how it is spreading, through newspaper, media and social network. People should be given clear instructions about wearing of masks, washing hands and social distancing. The people should be given work from home jobs to protect themselves from the pandemic. People should be made fully aware to take nutritional diet as a safeguard against the virus. Henceforth, I request you to kindly look into the situation and take necessary steps.

Thanking You

79. Hazards of Environmental Pollution

Pune, Mar., 20:

-By our correspondent

Environmental pollution has become one of the most dangerous hazards of the recent times and the fact is that many natural and man-made factors are there leading to the environmental pollution. Man-made factors are chiefly responsible for this hazard.

Pollution of environment is one of the major problems even in the state of Maharashtra. It has really become a very critical issue. There are many reasons causing this problem and adding it to. Growing urbanisation and industrialisation, stress of increasing population, increasing traffic, decreasing trees and forests have resulted in pollution. As people are migrating to the cities, the civic facilities are under a great stress. The smoke from the vehicles, from factory chimneys are polluting the air. People cannot have fresh air to breathe. Ecological balance is at stake. The air, water, noise and land pollution has impaired the human life. Environment is suffering from extreme imbalance.

A huge loss has already taken place to environment. All the factors leading to this pollution need to be checked immediately.

(C) Good morning respected honourable chief guests, invitees and my dear friends.

This National Science Day, I am standing before you to express my views on ‘Science: A Wonder for Human Beings’. We celebrate this day every year on Frebruary 28 as our Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman discovered the Raman effect on February 28, 1928. It was a revolution in the field of science.

All aspects of human life are influenced by science. Numerous inventions and researches of science has made our lives luxurious. We get hot water from geyser, air conditioners and coolers, washing machines lighten the work of our daily life. Science provides different ways to farmers for better production, computers are proving to be a great boon in many fields of human life.

We can also reach any hook and corner of the world with the fast means of transportation. Many new medicines and vaccines helps us in leading a healthy life. So we need to be thankful to science for all this.

Thank you all for giving me a patient ear.

The entire text is marked by questions directed at the readers. Each stanza contains two to three questions which probe at one’s treatment of others.

The poem beings with the speaker asking the reader if they did anything to improve the day of another human being. He continues to ask if the reader greeted his friends cheerfully,
In the last two stanzas of the poem, the speaker inquires about the reader’s actions. The poem concludes with the speaker reminding the reader that it is up to God whether or not you have a tomorrow. So one should consider one’s actions carefully if one wants to see the next day.

The poet has used interrogation as the emphatic poetic device, making the readers think about their actions very carefully.

82. Statement of Purpose

In school going days, history was nothing but a list of monarchs, series of wars and their outcomes or various dynasties for me. But this perception of history changed in Std. 9 as my history teacher created interest in it and I realized that all facts of life are linked to History. Gradually, my interest in the subject started increasing day by day.

Now, I really have the wish to get myself admitted to the prestigious college like yours in London. It is because your college has a very nice department of South Asian History and a wonderful library. I know that the eminent historians teach in your college. So, I would also like to have this opportunity of learning from the internationally reputed professors after getting admission in your institution.

I want to have a firm base in the socio-economic history of medieval India in my graduation span so that I can move on to my post-graduation. Further, I wish to pursue doctoral research on the topic-life and work of saints. I am a voracious reader and I hope that whatever saint literature I have read, would help me in good position.

I am a state-level swimmer. It is the activity that requires extreme physical and mental fitness. Competing at in the state-level competitions actually in a great challenge. Similarly, I like to play chess because I like the permutations and combinations and making the unique move which can help me win in the end.

I am assisting Dr. Vasudha Shastri Madam as the amateur research assistant. She was working on the monumental work on the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. While working with her, I learnt many new things about the movement.

Now I am sincerely expecting to get an opportunity of perfect exposure to a really good academic atmosphere available in your reputed institution. It would help to bring out whatever best is available in me.
